Uniform Expectations

School Uniform - launching for September 2018

We are proud, as part of our School Vision, to teach our children to take pride in their appearance. We expect all pupils at Northlands to wear their uniform correctly and with due care and attention to our high school expectations.

Uniform provides that consistency and sense of belonging for all children in all year groups, as well as preparing those soon to move to secondary school for new expectations.

Response:

Ties – safety and comfort.

The first ties will be ‘gifted’ (FREE) to all pupils.

Ties will now all be clip on for safety reasons. Where pupils are carrying out activities that may mean they would experience discomfort by wearing a tie, school will act accordingly. E.g. a ‘heat wave’ may mean that pupils are asked not to wear a tie, in the same way we occasionally allow untucked shirts in hot weather.

Shorts permitted?

Black or grey shorts are permitted.

Jumpers without logo permitted?

Now not permitted. No other items of uniform are expected to have a logo but school jumpers with a logo are expected. Previous school jumpers (£9.00) and polo shirts (£5.50) with logo were available so although school has increased expectations with regards our new jumper (£10.00), we have balanced that in terms of all other items.

Cardigans permitted?

At this stage we have not included this as an option so as to keep the uniform simple – but may do so at a later date.

Summer option for boys?

Girls are permitted to wear summer dresses when weather permits. We do wish to provide an option for boys. All suggestions welcome.

High sanctions for uniform non-compliance.

Pupils at Northlands are young and will be supported, not sanctioned, through this change.

Financial Implications.

Uniform has a cost implication for parents and school has worked hard to ensure this has been taken into account. Shoes, trousers, skirts and polo/shirts have not had an impact on increasing costs for parents. Ties are gifted so therefore also won’t incur costs for parents unless the tie is lost. The only substantial cost is the new expectation about the logo jumper. We have ensured best quality at minimum costs and compared our uniform pricing to other schools locally to ensure these costs are reasonable. Old polo shirts (including those with logos) can be recycled and used as PE Kit so that no items are wasted. School doesn’t expect pupils will need more than 2 jumpers each and have ensured a range of sizes are available. We will also launch an optional swap-shop system so that when children have outgrown their jumper, parents can bring the jumper back in to school in a reasonable condition to swap it for a bigger size from the used swap shop!
