School Governors
Northlands Primary School
One Community – Many Cultures – Achieving Together

Message from the Chair of Governors
I have lived close to the School since 2009 and I have three children all of which attend or have attended the School. With my oldest child joining in 2010 and my first term as a Governor starting in 2016 I have got to know the School and its community well and it has been a privilege to see the it develop. In September 2020 I became Chair of the Governing Body, a role I am proud to hold. Myself and my fellow Governors meet regularly and visit the School to help us carry out our duties. The core functions of the Governing Body are:
- Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
- Holding the Headteacher and other senior leaders to account for the educational performance of the School and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff.
- Overseeing the financial performance of the School and making sure it's money is well spent
I can be contacted via the School office.
Mr Ian Dewes, Chair of Governors
STRUCTURE OF THE GOVERNING BODY
At Northlands, the Governors are representatives of all the key groups involved in the School – the Parents, the Staff, the Local Authority and the Community. Some are appointed and some are elected. All serve for a term of four years. Further information is contained in our constitution document.
We meet together at least once a term as a whole Governing Body. In addition, each Governor has an area on the School Development Plan that they are responsible for monitoring. There are also designated governors for SEND provision, Safeguarding and Health and Safety.

The Governors of Northlands School believe it is important that the Governing Body reflects the diversity of the School community and has appointed people from a variety of backgrounds, skills and experience. The Governors collect data on the diversity of the board, including age, gender and ethnicity. We use that data to inform recruitment to the Governing Body, ensuring there is always a diverse range of perspectives to support robust decision making. The Governing Body has decided not to publish this diversity data online as individuals could be identified and we have a legal obligation to protect personal data.
If you would like to register your interest in joining our School as a Governor, please contact the Chair, Clerk or Headteacher.
What do governors do?
The governing body provides strategic leadership and accountability in a school. It has three key functions:
- Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure it’s money is well spent
- Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
- Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
As a governor, you will be able to:
- use your own experience of education and life beyond school to inform conversations
- develop and utilise your skills in a board-level environment
- make a valuable contribution to education and your community
- support and challenge the school so that it improves for pupils and staff
- bring your unique experiences, perspectives and insights in to decision-making in the interests of the school community.
